Obon

Usually we avoid leaving Tokyo over Obon - it's just too crowded.  This Obon was the first since Hiro's brother died, and custom dictates attendance at the family grave.  Much like ohigan, there were five graves to visit and two butsudan.

Odate municipal cemetery - space has run out at many of the temples and the
city has established a cemetery on the outskirts.  As far as I know grass
cemeteries are unusual in Japan.

Typical food offerings  - the contents depends on families and people and area.
Fruit, sekihan (celebratory red bean rice), rice crackers and seasonal vegetables
and a drink / water/ tea are typical.
Flowers and  incense are also part of the custom
